LONDON, England, September 17-Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admitted his side were “very average” against Borussia Dortmund as they opened their Champions League campaign with a 2-0 defeat on Tuesday.
Ciro Immobile fired the Bundesliga giants ahead on the stroke of half-time before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang doubled their tally shortly after the restart at the Westfalenstadion.
The Gunners weren’t without their threats, though, but proved extremely wasteful on the night, and in the end the manager admitted his side were second best.
“I think we were not at the requested level tonight. They deserved their win,” Wenger told Sky Sports.
“I still believe that on top of that, we were a bit unlucky as it was a throw-in to us 10 seconds before half time. We conceded the goal just after that.
“Despite our very average performance, we had plenty of chances. That’s a little bit of a paradox,” he added.
“We could’ve been leading the game, but they had plenty of chances too.”
